Andrew's Trip to Lazarote
By Andrew Buckley
In May 2025, I was lucky enough to take part in a luxury fam trip to Lanzarote courtesy of the Spanish Tourist Board. During this time, we got to stay at the beautiful Secrets Lanzarote. We also got to see inside the 5* Fariones Hotel and 5* Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort & Spa as part of a site visit.
Location
I stayed in Puerto Calero, which is located in the South of the Island. Our hotel, the Secrets Puerto Calero, is around a 30 minute drive from Arrecife airport, however there are closer resorts such as Matagorda and Puerto Del Carmen which are only a 10 to 15 minute drive from the airport. We travelled with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Arrecife. The flight takes approximately 4 hours each way.
What I Loved
I loved the peace and tranquillity of the adults-only accommodation whilst staying at the Secrets. It's close enough to Puerto Del Carmen that if you wanted a bit of hustle and bustle during the day or in the evening evening that you could get a taxi up to it. I also loved the trip to Timanfaya National Park. With its winding roads and steep drops, this journey is not for the faint of heart!
Activities & Places to See
- Timanfaya National Park - A stunning volcanic landscape shaped by eruptions through the years, offering dramatic scenery, geothermal demonstrations, and guided tours through lava fields that make it feel like walking on another planet.
- Jameos del Agua - A unique underground attraction created within a volcanic tunnel by artist César Manrique, combining natural lava formations with art, gardens, a concert hall, and an underground lake inhabited by rare blind albino crabs.
- Rancho Texas - A family friendly theme park in Lanzarote featuring animal shows, a zoo with exotic creatures, cowboy themed attractions, and a water park area.
- Shopping in Arrecife - The capital of Lanzarote offers a mix of traditional markets, boutique stores, and modern shopping centres where visitors can browse for local crafts, souvenirs, and duty-free goods.
Shopping & Nightlife
Puerto Calero is known for its upmarket shops and stylish boutiques, making it a great spot for a leisurely browse. Arrecife also offers excellent shopping, with a good mix of high-street shops and local finds. For something more relaxed and quirky, Puerto del Carmen is perfect, with its lively markets and fun gift shops which are full of souvenirs and handmade items. If you are looking for nightlife, a short 15 minute taxi ride from Puerto Calero to Puerto del Carmen is highly recommended, where you will find plenty of bars, live music, and DJs keeping the party going well into the early hours.
